T'Pol character development
posted by usscaverns on September 5 2003, 8:58 am
It's good to see B&B going for some real character development in the "new improved" Enterprise:

T'Pol: "I am reading high levels of Ultraviolet radiation..."
T'Pol removing bikini top: "Would one of you boys spread some suntan lotion on me?"

I just watched last weeks rerun, the one with T'Pol in heat. Do not get me wrong, I enjoy a good looking woman as much as the next person, but... Give me a break, some of the scenes were so blatently targeted at young men. Close up shots of her thighs as she rubbed sun tan...gel... all over herself.

The Captain walks into being held hostage in a war zone, THEN you send in the Marines. Sigh. The only thing that will redeem this season is if the MACOs snicker endlessly oncamera about Porthous.

What is everyone's problem with the dog? I'm normally a act person, but even I think he's possibly the best member on the crew. He's had just as much character development as Malcom, as much screen time as Mayweather, and has been as crucial to the mission as Hoshi. He hasn't gotten anyone killed, unlike Trip, and his acting range may surpass that of T'Pol.

Now, I hate extraneous cute characters (ie the infernal Scrappy Doo) just as much as the next fan, but, what's wong with Porthos?

Exactly.

Quite frankly, Porthos is the only one on that show that I can stand to watch for more than a single scene.

And while I'm being frank, most of the cast I can't even stand for a full scene!

They should really rename and reimagine Enterprise as "Star Trek: The Adventures of Porthos and A Bunch of Stupid Humans (Plus A Reject From Baywatch: Vulcan Nights And Doctor Phlox, Medicine Alien) Who Always Screw Things Up". Hell, I'd watch that!

They held a panel on women in genre TV at WorldCon this year. The general opinion was that T'Pol didn't even merit discussion and Enterprise shouldn't be considered canonical Trek.

Now if only that attitude could spread to official trek conventions...

AFAIC, there are about 80 hours of canon (Star Trek plus a few of the first movies.) Everything else is historical revisionism.

Canon is ST:TOS, the movies, ST:TNG, ST:DS9 (unfortunatly), ST:VOYAGER (ugh), and ST:ENTERPRISE (to our dismay).

Pretty much everything with the Paramount logo on it, except the cartoon series.

Personally, I can't stand that moniker. MACO sounds like somebody that should be fixing my muffler.

Why were they too good to just call them 'Marines'? Is it not science fiction if the troopers don't have some made up section name?

I will be interested in what kind of armor/weapons these guys are carrying, because if they've got power suits or phaser deflectors then it'll question every red shirt that's ever bought it for the series.

Get a LIFE

I think the problem is that you all expect Trek to solve Pi or something. It's just a show! It's light entertainment. Enjoy it as such and get off your holier-than-thou thrones fer cripes sake! TOS - Good NG - Good 2 DS9 - Different, but good Voyager - Sucked, B&B forgot all the "rules". Enterprise - Good, the dog is less more annoying than Wes Crusher, and The Captain is better looking than Janeway. T'Pol is better looking than Spock, and the only dud is Malcom (aka: "The neurotic dandy") Have a laugh, enjoy the show, and remember that if you want to live in the Trek Universe check the mirror first. If you are overwiight or dumpy, you will not be allowed within 50 parsec's of a federation ship unless you are dressed up like an "ugly" alien. Losers are losers in the 24th century as much as they are today.

Dude, you don't understand. UPN passed on picking up Firefly to air this crap. Wearing my Browncoat all these months this summer until the Firefly movie got greenlighted has made me smell a little ripe.

Fair nuff, but Farscape died as well (although after a much longer run). It's the nature of networks (not Bragga and Berman) to cancel shows they can't sell (advertisers/ratings). Firefly wasn't bad, but I hardly see how bagging on Enterprise is going to bring it back. Firefly was poorly marketed. The commercials were painful to watch, and likely turned off more users than anything else. Trek may not be Firefly, Red Dwarf, Dr. Who, or Farscape, but that's not B&Bs fault. That's just business.

I hate to say it, but geek or not, this attitude stinks. This is the same attitude that says "well, that's politics. can't change it, might as well just bend over and accept it". (not saying you feel that way, but it's the same line of reasoning). "bagging on enterprise" is something we have every right to do - even if the show was GREAT. I know I can find at least two star trek fans who hate DS9 to every one that loved it. Enterprise, however, is pretty much universally maligned. And for good reason. When you do something and decide to put it in a pre-existing framework, you have a responsibility to respect that framework. That doesn't mean you have to keep it 100% intact. Sometimes it works better if you change something. But you need a good reason to change it. The people who made enterprise have NO respect for Star Trek. This is something that absolutely amazes me, as my wife just got me watching TNG episodes again and the name "Rick Berman" keeps showing up in the credits. these are GOOD shows. what the hell?? The problem, I think, is that these people were writing episodes that took place in the future. Continuity was not a problem - they were CREATING it. at that point, the framework can be stretched all you want, because "we just didn't understand this properly" is a perfectly acceptable way to throw out something we "knew" before. We do it all the time in real life. When you go BACK and start writing stories about what happened before - when there are pre-written records of major past events - you have to a) keep SOMEWHAT in line with those events and b) not throw out the culture that we already see. like one person said "if they have phaser deflectors, it'll throw into question every red-shirt that ever died". While yes, in the end it doesn't matter, because it's just TV, we're taking issue with it because it's BAD story telling. And if you're going to tell a bad story, you really ought to just save us the pain and not bother.

Normally I'm a pretty laid back guy, but I have to respond to this little gem. Let me lay a few things out:
Bureau 42 is site that traditionally focuses on science fiction

While the academics may not consider Star Trek to be "hard SF," it is considered to be a form of Sci-Fi

This particular thread happens to focus on the the slice of the Sci-Fi genre that is Star Trek, ergo it is only natural to discuss it here.

Now with that in mind I have to ask some questions. The multi-threaded nature of this site allows for mutliple topics to be under discussion at any given time. So if one topic does not interest you, you may choose another. That said, I have to ask you, Ms. lilfizz_babygirl, why did you even enter this thread if you knew you found the material and this interested in it to be so offensive? Is your ire part of a social view, if so I would be interested in have a more detailed discussion.

actually, we never needed it before. At this point I think we're taking an "ignore it and it'll go away" attitude - so if we could all stop looking at the troll....yes, I know it's hideous, but you're just HEY! DON'T POKE AT THAT! YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE IT'S BEEN!

You get the idea. If it becomes unmanageable, there are contingency plans. Thank you, the management. heh.
