Jake 2.0 Cancelled

Category: TV Series Anonymous Coward writes, According to this article, linked from the Jake 2.0 TVTome pages, Jake 2.0 has been cancelled, 3 of the 4 unaired episodes (of the 16 produced in a 22 episode order) may be shown by UPN. In it's place is Yet Another Reality Show called "The Player" *yawn*. It's too bad. I thought Jake was beginning to hit its stride, but it didn't run fast enough from the TV Monster, scoring the lowest ratings among TV dramas, this season.

As much as I didn't like Jake 2.0, I agree with this comment... reality shows are quick easy money... it's jerry springer with class. trash tv. These stupid networks are aiming for the lowest tv watcher and ignoring the intelligent.

While this is true, I think most of the intelligent viewers who were watching TV at the same time Jake 2.0 was on, were tuned into The West Wing... So this doesn't really have anything to do with the intelligence of the viewer, as much as it has to do with ratings and advertising revenue. Statistics show that there's a higher percentage of stupid tv viewers than intelligent, so if you're a Network Exec going after ratings, pandering to the morons is one surefire way to do that.

i'm so sick of these pricks cancelling shit for the idiot of the day, er, reality show. I don't watch a single one of them. Now there are like 4 shows I watch regularly thanks to that cancellation.

Look at it this way. If this reality TV trend keeps up, then you won't need to buy a new HDTV. Why spend money to watch high definition crap.

I thought that I would have been one of the early adopters of HDTV. I cannot justify spending the money on the equipment with the quality of programming today. The only thing that I have scheduled on my TiVo this evening is the local news and I fast forward through most of the segments.

I never watched it. I knew they would just go and cancel it mid season anyway, so why even bother getting attached?

Reality shows get the best ratings, not because they're worth watching, but because there's nothing else on and only the brainless fans of those shows watch TV anymore, everyone else is fleeing to videogames, the net, or the woods.

So, lets start a pool: How long until Tru Calling doesn,t get anymore do- over days? I say right at the end of sweeps...

It wasn't the best show ever, but it was good. It's clear that a new support model has to be developed for TV shows: there's got to be a way that those of who like *good* tv can arrange to get it. Are we going to have to go to PPV series?

Well, the Neilsen ratings are the God All Mighty of TV: They determine who stays and who goes. One company is in charge of deciding every station and network's show ratings, and the ratings decide wich one thrive and wich don't.

So, I take the torch, you grab that yonder pitch fork and we'll go down to the Neilsen's building and discuss this thing...

I say we talk them into using TiVo stats. TiVo isn't available where I am yet, but I'm confident that the skew in the statistics will be favourable for the shows I watch. :)

Fine with me --- I *do* have Tivo ;-) But eventually, everyone will have one, and it'll just be the same thing all over again, so we really do need to find a way for niche shows to succeed...

Speaking of which, I did a Nielson diary recently. I don't watch reality shows so they didn't get any of my votes. I watched Jake 2.0 every week till it was replaced with The Newest Spank Model Show.

Now I watch Angel when there's nothing good on Sci-fi or I end up watching my Stargate dvds again.

The execs should just remember, reality shows are just the newest fad. They're here till people get bored of the mindless idiocy and want something with substance.

Here's a thought, the reality shows make Married with Children look like The Einsteins.

I thought this show had its moments... I think, like any show, it would've taken a little while to get its legs. I've been thinking about the PPV idea as well... are we going to have straight-to-DVD series? I'd probably pay $40 for a Battlestar Galactica box set, for example... but I guess you'd need 500,000 households to feel the same way...

I hope that UPN reads these comments and reconsiders. The biggest problem was that Jake 2.0 was aired against The West Wing. Did they know that The West Wing won the HRC (Human Rights Campaign) prize at the dinner in Washington DC this year? It is silly to measure a new show against it. I'm not sure that it should be aired the same night as TheWB's Smallville. There is a basic similarity of the character to Clark Kent in Smallville. But Jake is much funnier (as Christopher Gorham plays him), and seems to have no character flaws at all (he is a bit silly before the accident). He is a great role model. He always reaches for the moral high ground, never misuses his "gifts" and challenges his superiors to do the right thing. There is no red kryptonite here. I have several suggestions. (1) Run it on a different night (2) sell it to another network (Bravo, Showtime, SciFi, or TheWB "Frog," because maybe it really does fit TheWB "young adult drama" mix, although it is a bit of competition for Smallville (3) David Greenwalt approaches a movie studio or gets investors together for a feature movie (maybe an indie). Maybe Miramax/Dimension, maybe Sony Screen Gems, maybe even New Line. Maybe you make it really funny and witty (Christopher Gorham could do this, whereas an actor like Welling could not) and get it into Sundance. But the show is too good to let it die out of shortsightedness. UPN, please read this. Don't throw this away out of neglect, find a buyer who will keep it going (and put on the three episodes in Feb on a different night.) Jake 2.0 had a truely original combination of characters and traits and I thought it showed more promise than any of the newer star trek first year runs (Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Enterprise). It is #1 of 2 shows I watch during the week #2 being Enterprise which I thought would fail first. Wednesday night from 8:00 - 10:00 was a techie geeks dream come true. I can't believe they are airing a show about supermodels in J2.0's place. I like 'em as much as the next guy but I don't need a reality show about them. Please labotomize me an make me watch "The Dukes of Hazzard" reruns (for those of you that remember them), anything but another reality show. To be perfectly honest I would prefer a woman like Doctor Diane Hughes (Keegan Connor Tracy), a character that represents intelligence and beauty over a dim-witted super model, if I had the chance. I like brains as much as beauty. Tall order which Keegan fills in her part on the show if you ask me. Maybe a letter writting campaign to Sci-Fi to pick up Jake2.0 would be a better use or resources than wasting time on UPN who obviously doesn't have a clue unless it were on a balance sheet labeled "huge profit". Atleast Sci-Fi knows how to do science fiction right and keep it right! Look at all their successful original programming. Since there is nothing worth watching I'm going to get my frustration out in UT2K3. Later all.

I just want to say that I am a very loyal fan of the series. I didn't even realize that it had been cancelled until I found out via this website. It appears that the reality shows such as Top Model have a good size fan base, but I wanted people to know that I feel Jake 2.0 is a much better show than the reality shows. In fact, I hardly ever watch brand new shows because lately they seem to all be sitcoms or reality shows. Jake had a lot of potential and I think it's terrible that it got cancelled so quickly. I sincerely hope that it will be given the chance to be aired on a different night, and I really want to see the last 4 episodes that UPN has decided not to air. I plan to write the powers that be at UPN and voice my opinion there to. EllisT

Cancelling Jake2.0 is stupid, It makes me wonder why here in England they bought the rights to view this if there is only going to be 16 episodes or what ever it is. I just hope that they won't cancel Cold Case or the Handler.

I THINK JAKE 2.0 WAS BETTER THAN SOME OF THE PROGRAMMES SHOWN ON SKY ONE. OKAY IT WAS SLOW TO START WITH BUT BECAMME MORE INTERESTING AS IT WENT ALONG. SOME OF YOU WHO DIDN'T THINK IT WAS GOOD WERE CRAZY! OKAY COMPARED TO 24 IT DOESN'T COMPARE BUT ITS BETTER THAN LAS VEGAS AND TRU CALLING! AND ESPECIALLY BIG BROTHER 1 2 3 4 ETC, YOU GET THE POINT!
