Batman tries the same thing in Death in the Family, under stress, of course. I doubt this will be a masterpiece, but they've put an incredible amount of work into it, and there seems (as best as one can tell from a trailer) to be an understanding of the genre, something frequently missing from Hollywood superhero flicks.

As far as not being canon (i.e. Barbara's not paralyzed)--I guess you could put it in the Animated Series universe. At first I thought it was odd that Dick would come back as Robin rather than Nightwing, but I guess that could be because he's specifically coming back to avenge Batman.

I finally had the chance to explore a little more, and it appears you are correct about the trailer being the film. Still, one wonders what these guys could do, given time and resources.

Even with its flaws, this trailer looks far, far better than the last two Batman films.

Why do so many of these fanfic films (like Batman: Dead End) seem to be so much better than the features?

In other words, its done by people who care about the product, not about the return on the investment. The fewer accountants and lawers that are allowed to get near the production, the better the product will be. Suits are the kryptonite to creativity. They make it weak: or kill it, depending on exposure.
