User Friendly comments on Trek

User Friendly has a recent
strip
that outlines three possible ways to get
the Star Trek franchise back on its feet. I
think they each have a real chance for success, so I
thought I’d point them out to our readers.

  1. A Poll Maybe?
Do we have a polling system? Which do we think would work best? I’m all for Berman Goes Away, of course. But Space Lesbians is a close second.

      I vote Space Lesbians

        Can’t we have both?

Watch Star Trek: Space Lesbians as the crew of the USS Clitoris save Earth from the evil Space Vampires across time and space as they seek out new life and new civilizations. Be amazed at the intricate manuevers of “first contact” and the intimate relations between the crew.

            Well played. Bravo!

Oddly enough, I have a sort of faith in Berman’s ability to helm a space lesbian show. In fact, he should stop his efforts at destroying Star Trek and go on to make the Space Lesbians Fun Time Variety Hour Spectacular instead. Lets start a petition!

  2. People are already jonesing for a fix
and the show’s not even finished filming its last episode!

I say, Paramount needs to take a step back and rethink how they want to entertain us. I was all for JMS to step forward and take the reigns, but if you check out this site, maybe he’s got a point. I do think there’s merit to stepping back for a short period and re-evaluating it with fresh eyes.

BTW, lest you think I’m a hater, I do really enjoy the new season, but I firmly believe they should’ve been here two years ago.

Like you, I’ve enjoyed the new season but certain events have conspired against me watching it regularly. One of them is moving for grad school… But the big one is the friday night time slot. With the exception, of X-Files, friday night is like a death sentence for almost anything.

That and the fact that Sci-Fi channel has good stuff from 7 to 11 isn’t helping them… Come to think of it… I can’t remember the last time I watched JAG…

I was thinking this the other day when I read another article on this subject. People who want to watch the genre on Friday nights are looking at Sci-Fi first and then other channels. I’m not a big Stargate fan, but a lot of people I know like it. So yet again UPN puts on the whole a so-so Star Trek series up against another show that is attracking the same set of eyeball. Last year it was Enterprise vs. Smallville. This year it’s Enterprise vs. Stargate. UPN would propably have done better to put Enterprise on Saturday night. As has been said before there are limit number of eyeballs for science fiction. I would hope that UPN learns not to put any more science fiction on Friday night or up against shows that would have an overlapping fan base.

Networks keep doing that! Not just with sci-fi, they never accept that people are watching another channel, they think they can get them to switch to their channel with a show for similar interests. It’s idiotic.

Don’t they realise that we want sci-fi, and we’d turn to THEIR channel if they’d put it before of after, or on another night entirely? Instead of splitting the pickings they should (if they were smart, wich we all know is not a trait common to studio execs) allow people to enjoy BOTH shows, not make feeble attempts at getting them to their channels when there’s something good somewhere else. Why don’t you give us the sci-fi when it’s convenient for us? Why force people to make a choice? You could let the other channel have the geeks during that hour, then get the same bunch of people to switch to you during a different hour.

We’re not in the 60s anymore! We have remotes! We can actually watch more than one channel during a given night since we don’t have to go fiddle with the dials all the way over there on the television set… damn!

Rent “Monday Night War” and it will tell you ppl only watch the first best show that comes on, old examp:

WCW NITRO on TNT at 7:55 (live)

WWF RAW is WAR on USA 8:00 (tape delay)

TNT used this strategy for 5 years and won the ratings war every year. that, and they put commercial slots over lapping USA’s commercials to keep viewers on TNT.

TV Networking is a cat and mouse game with other TV networks, I interned at chnl 12 UPN in Portland, Oregon with the Chief of Programming, (along with 4 other interns for about 6 months) and she told us its all about commercial time placement when you have competing show in the same time slot.

  3. Queer Eye
I’m all for the Queer Eye idea. I think that it would give us an introspective look at the complexities of Vulcan society, much like the Vulcan arc did.

Yes we, as Trek fans, can’t get enough of the Vulcans. Now, would the queer guys be Vulcans or Klingons?

    • Romulans …

I *despise* the word “queer”, and please forgive me for perpetuating stereotpyes, not that “Queer Eye” breaks any new ground (let’s see an all-gay male mechanic team on Monster Garage …) Anyways, here goes … :)

I cannot wrap my mind around a gay Klingon. “Everything’s red and black, red and black. How about throwing in some OTHER COLORS, I mean, just because we’re fierce doesn’t mean we can’t have some COLOR. HELLO, someone’s decorator must be color blind. Darling, this gahk needs a pinch of cinnamon, and maybe a twist of lemon. Leather and steel, leather and steel. Am I the only one around here who could KILL for some chiffon, a hint of lace. Not that I don’t like leather, but there’s a time and a place …”

Romulans, on the other hand. Romulus and Remus … What a couple. A Romulan hair dresser “so I was clipping this Centurion the other day, and he said ‘I want something besides the plain old boring bowl cut’, so I suggested highlights, and a permanent. Wouldn’t you know he was back the next day getting his eyebrows waxed.”

      -Joe G.

        Ewww, they’re BROTHERS, man!

Aside from that, gay Klingons… where would they ever find a bottom? That might explain the expansionist star empire though. Hmmm…

Can’t… stop… thinking this through. Now I have a damn explanation for the odd notion of Klingon engineers and whatnot. It never made sense before that they would ever stop fighting each other long enough to start bolting a spaceship together… must…wash…brain.

            Actually…

In Ancient Greece, The Gays Were The Manly-MeatEatting-KillAnythingThatMoves Types, And The Heterosexuals Were The Effeminate. Want To Attract Men? Act Manly! Want To Get Women? And Feminine!

Achille’s Was Gay. Having The Greatest Warrior In The World Be A Woman Lover? That Doesn’t Make Sense! I’d Want To Go Spend Time With his Men!

…So, Gay Klingons? Makes Perfect Sense To Me.

This actually continued until a much later time than the Ancient Greeks – the switch from a masculine-homosexual / feminine-heterosexual takes place in English literature starting in about Elizabethan times. Shakespeare’s Sonnets (let’s say, oh, 18 and 130) display this sort of reversed (to us) sexuality, as do a number of his plays – reread Romeo and Juliet with an eye for this during the Mercutio/Romeo/Benvolio scenes, as well as with Romeo’s various introspections on his love of Juliet (he’s afraid he’s becoming less of a man). I’ve got R&J in one of my classes this semester, and it’s the first time I’ve read it since grade 9 – it’s surprising how much my teachers glossed over back then.

Well, it could be argued that he was bi. After all, he did spend half the book sulking over his concubine being taken away, so he might have had some interest in women (though it could just be the glory). Besides, Homer never outright says that his relationship with Patrochlus is anything more than ‘just good friends’. Still, we at least have outright proof that he was was a transvestite. An action transvestite.

It could explain the smooth Klingon vs ridged Klingon situation, too.

Actually… This has been done! I remember seeing a fan-made film last year that had this exact theme.
Well, not exactly. The theme was how a ‘Trekkie’ was given a makeover. Still, moderately funny.
