First broadcast August 13, 2005.

Plot:

Jade and Tukkars work together to track a rogue Vexcor technician who has information that will incriminate Essa Rompkin and free 01 Boxer– steps necessary if they are to stop the opening of the link. Back in betaverse, Karl Lubinsky, Blues Paddock, and Reena try to determine the purpose of an enigmatic device.

High Points:

Please hold. Your death is important to us.

1. 01 Boxer’s ascendency features several bizarre dramatic flourishes that work very well. They matched my expectations.

2. Charlie’s encounter with the world’s worst bouncer made a nice comic counterpoint to the episode’s darker moments.

3. See “Story.”

Low Point:

Essa Rompkin’s manaical turn when she learns she is under arrest didn’t really work for me.

The Scores:

Originality: 2/6. Although this is a strong episode, it has a conventional quest/videogame plot: the heroes must join forces and, through many difficulties, find x, which is the key to stopping the Bad ThingTM from happening.

Effects: 6/6 The low-budget but effective handling of the Graves impressed me.

Story: 5/6. I like the way this ends. The writers know that stopping the link from opening does not mean that everything will be okay.

Acting: 5/6. Even though he only appears in a few scenes, Michael Filipowich’s 01 Boxer steals this one. Pierce and Dennis make a strong team. Some of Michelle Burgess’s work as Essa Rompkin left me a bit cold.

Emotional Response: 5/6.

Production: 6/6.

Overall: 5/6.

In total, “Flesh” receives 34/42

Additional Comments

The season– and possibly the series– has one more episode.

Did Brion Boxer commit those murders just to eliminate other potential heirs?

  1. the link
In the last Vexcor scene the countdown is still going for the link reopening. I don’t think CJ is as safe as he thinks.
Also, Reena seems to have handled the integration well, what with her new skillset and increased insight.
Last thing: I know AlphaVerse is a very big-brother opressive society, but I never imagined that they’d have a giant laser from the sky kill people. It seemed Charlie was just as surprised as me.
