Shatner pitches Star Trek prequel
posted November 10 2005, 4:47 am by fiziko

Category: Star Trek An Anonymous Coward sent us this URL with an article about William Shatner's proposal for a new Trek TV series. It seems like it has more to do with books he's writing than a TV series at this point, but he's put the offer out there.

Well, if it wasn't for ST:V, I'd say it couldn't be worse than what Berman regurgitated this past decade.

Yes it can! Adolescent Kirk and Spock sounds like the most horrible thing ever - and it's just crying out for continuity violations.

Somebody please tell us what JMS's proposal is. I want something good.

Perhaps I should write one...

Well, I still say the next Star Trek should be a reality show where trekkies hunt and kill Rick Berman.

We drop Berman on an island, with, say, a day's head start. And then trekkies are handed random star trek weapons (ba'tleth, etc) and let loose. The winner gets, I dunno, a date with the ST babe of his choice (or with Sulu, if that's you cup of tea ;-)

Forgive me for this, but...

"It's dead, Jim."

Seriously, though...I enjoyed Trek as much as anyone else, but the franchise is now certifiably six feet under. Rick Berman forcing Scot Bakula to impersonate George W Bush may only have mortally wounded the franchise, but the combination of that and Nemesis represented the final two hit knockout punch. Forget talk of a "hiatus" as well; the sort of people we saw in "Trekkies" might want a second (actually sixth) coming, but mainstream society had had enough Trek by the end of TNG. Trying to bring it back now would represent the science fiction equivalent of the film "Weekend at Bernie's."

I can understand Shatner wanting to bring it back, but two of the TOS cast are now dead, and pretty much everyone else associated with it is old and grey...or at least heading in that direction. Shatner should leave well enough alone, IMHO.

Star Trek is in the ground. It should be permitted to rest in peace.
