A recent breakthrough may make nuclear fusion a viable source of power within a decade. We've heard it before, of course, but this latest announcement, by Robert Bussard, is compelling.
It has a sense of 'too good to be true' about it, especially with its severe disparagement of the ordinary tokamak research.
Of course, such missteps have happened before and will no doubt happen again. If this really does have the kind of potential Bussard thinks - or even half of it - there must be a private individual out there with deep enough pockets to help it get off the ground. If it works it's like the ultimate modern contribution to the benefit of human civilisation.
