Synopsis

At last, the resolution of the cliffhanger we were cruelly left with last year. With the Cylons and Adama in a face-off over the Eye of Jupiter, somebody has to blink…

High Points

  • All the Cylon models overruling the D’Annas.
  • The relationship between Apollo and Anders and their relationship with Starbuck, and the scenes which result from it.
  • Sharon and Helo.
  • Tyrol’s final realisation about the Eye.
  • …and all the action moves back to Galactica.

Low Points

  • It’d probably be too easy, but I think we would all have loved a shot from D’Anna’s point of view during her vision.

The Scores

Originality: I’m not really sure how original this episode is. It uses some familiar elements, but everything’s spun together into a story which feels fresh and interesting all the way through, and it’s got plenty of surprises for good measure. Five out of six.

Effects: The effects are good, but I’m not convinced that they’re the best the series can do. Five out of six.

Story: Just about every plot thread we’ve been introduced to so far is moved along in a dramatic fasion, and some come to at least a temporary conclusion. All of it is wonderfully paced and superbly written. Six out of six.

Acting: I can’t find fault. Some actors weren’t able to shine as well as we know they can, but that’s only because their characters had very little screen time this week. This week’s primary characters — and there are a lot of them — were all spot on. Six out of six.

Production: Five out of six.

Emotional response: I’m not going to say what emotions this episode elicts because you can discover that for yourself, but it’s got a lot of them. Six out of six.

Overall: This is a superb episode, truly a high point of the series. Six out of six.

And so The Eye of Jupiter, Part Two gets a grand total of thirty-nine out of forty-two.

  1. Who are the Five?
So who are the Five, there was a definite glint of recognition on her face so darnit its probably someone we already know. Starbuck, maybe? The coincidence with her painting seems all too.. coincidental. So, is it Sunday yet?

    • Re: Who are the Five?

its probably someone we already know. Starbuck, maybe?

It has to be somebody who doesn’t have kids. And since Cylons don’t seem to grow up from kids, it has to be somebody who was never demonstrably a kid. The Adamas are each other’s alibi. The Chief and Kallie (sp?) are out. Helo’s out. Rosalyn is out, since her cancer cure by Cylon blood makes no sense otherwise.

It has to be someone the Cylons were specifically mean to, making D’Anna want to apologize. The "I had no idea" line probably puts Baltar out.

Starbuck is the easy call, what with the Eye of Jupiter showing up in her paintings. Here’s one to think about: how about if Tigh is a Cylon?

One unanswered question, do Cylons age? All the ones we’ve seen of any give model have been the same age. Tigh has aged since Adama knew him. How long have they known Starbuck?

      • Re: Who are the Five?

Since Sharon had a child, it most certainly CAN be someone who has children. And with 5 more models out there, any one could be a child model, or with other "features" we don’t know about.

The Adamas are each other’s alibi. The Chief and Kallie (sp?) are out.

I’ll grant you Adama and Lee, mainly because of the long history Bill has with hunamity, long before the Cylons became humanoid, and Lee being his son. Either the Cheif or Callie could be, but I doubt it so I’ll agree with you.

Helo’s out. Rosalyn is out, since her cancer cure by Cylon blood makes no sense otherwise.

        Agreed, agreed.

Starbuck is the easy call, what with the Eye of Jupiter showing up in her paintings.

But we know from her backstory she was abused by her folks as a kid. However, it’s entirely possible she’s a Cylon who grew up from a child being one of the other 5. It’s possible one of those 5 models was a child designed to grow up.
So, that’s still in the air…

Here’s one to think about: how about if Tigh is a Cylon?

I’ve considered it, but again, with Adama knowing him so long, they’ve both been around pre-Human Cylon, so it’s highly unlikely.

One unanswered question, do Cylons age? All the ones we’ve seen of any give model have been the same age. Tigh has aged since Adama knew him. How long have they known Starbuck?

Well, Adama’s known her at least several years pre-Holocaust because she was engaged to his son, and was in the service before Adama’s son, since she was training and testing him. Still, she very well could be. I’m not sure how I like that idea though. I’m not sure I see it serving a purpose yet.

        • Re: Who are the Five?
What if Adama’s unseen wife was a Cylon, created just after the war to seduce fleet officers? And Apollo was the first "Hera"?

            • Re: Who are the Five?

And Ellen coulda been one of these models, too…

Altho, upon reflection, probably not. Baltar tested her and didn’t tell anyone, including the viewers, the results. If he knew she was indeed one of the remaining Cylon models, he wouldn’t be asking about the "Five" because he would already know one of them…

        • Re: Who are the Five?

Since Sharon had a child, it most certainly CAN be someone who has children.

I’m taking it at face value that Hera is the first and so far only Cylon child. I’ll be very disappointed if Moore retcons that point.

I’m also assuming that the final 5 are Cylons of the same type as the ones we’ve seen so far, not "Super-Cylons" with powers and abilities beyond the seven models we know.

    • Re: Who are the Five?

      So who are the Five

one possibility that i started to wonder about after the "i had no idea" line was that one of the Five would be a Cylon model we already know — currently spying on the rest of the cylons.

One thing i’ve never seen anyone mention is the fact that the physical embodyment of the concious minds of the cylon ships is humanoid — but not one of the normal cylon models (if you read me a transcript of the episodes without letting me see the visuals I would have guessed that every ship would have a bald, pale, haggard looking instances of one of the regular cylon models) … perhaps the ship’s embodiment is one of the final five

  2. Baltar
I’m really looking forward to this Sunday’s "Lets Torture Baltar" episode. Least I hope that’s what happens. Don’t think he’s gonna be having much fun…

The whole Who Are The Five thing was a bit of a cop-out. I doubt it’s Baltar because I don’t think she’d have said "I had no idea". Honestly, I’m not too happy with the idea that someone we know as a human – especially if it’s someone we’re used to as a human – turns out to be cylon. That’s a plot move that’d be CRAZY difficult to implement.

Not really. We know that cylons can pass for extended periods of times amongst humans, and who knows in how many ways "The Five" are special compared to the regular humaniform cylons.
That said, Kara would still be a tough one since they were supposedly harvesting her eggs during her short incarceration on Caprica. One would have to assume that a thorough medical exam was part of the deal, and cylons would seem to be a in a position to notice even small differences that would show up if Kara wasn’t fully human.

Of course, we’re still going on the assumption that "The Five" are more like cylons than humans. Considering how little is known is about them, they could be human, cylon or something in-between like Hera Agathon. They could even be completely alien compared to cylons and humans, which could bring the show slightly closer to the original series where the cylons were creations of an extinct alien species. Maybe said aliens gave the cylons consciousness?

Note: I don’t listen to the podcasts, so if aliens have been completely disavowed by Ronnie D and company, don’t hold it against me. :)

I completely agree. Thinking about the scene with D’Anna and the apology, I am absolutely convinced its Tigh.

One other thing I convinced of is that the "Jump the Sharkitude" capacity that the reveal of the final five Cylons has is of monumental size.

This is the whole reason I was so completely pissed off at the episodes in season one where they intentionally convoluted the plot in order to destroy the cylon detector.

The only reason to do that is to make one of the leads a cylon. Way back then I made the decsion that if either Adama, Starbuck, or Roslyn were revealed to be a cylon, I would quit watching the show immediately. There are also very valid story points all along the way that would represent serious plot continuity problems (of Berman and Bragga proportions) if they had any of these four be Cylons, in fact in building out this story alomst every lead would have continuity problems if they were cylons.

Adamas: Father and son, Hera is the first (and only) cylon child. If she isn’t really the first cylon child then she isn’t realy all that important is she?

Starbuck: They took one of her ovaries. Why do that to a cylon? There is the potential plot copout that the cylons didn’t know, but if the idea she’s a cylon hinges on what Leoben says, shouldn’t at least he know/suspect. It will be a pure jump the shark moment if Starbuck’s a cylon. I will stop watching from that moment on if this comes to pass.

Roslyn: Only if the writers want to prove themselves more continuity damaging than the writers of Enterprise could Roslyn be a cylon. Again this would be pure JTS.

Now on to the characters I didn’t mention quitting the show cold turkey for if _they_ were cylons. But I’d still be pissed.

Gaeta: I was convinced he was a cylon after the camera move when he shook hands whit Sharon in the season one finale. But his comments to Baltar in Exedous would be forfeit if he were a cylon, they would mean nothing, and I don’t like that idea.

Duala: This one actually doesn’t bug me too much. It would be an easy way to kill her off so Lee and Starbuck could be together. Plot machinations, but Duala hasn’t made too many stands that prove she’s human like Gaeta.

Of course there’s the apology. It was kind of insinuated that Leoben took Starbuck and did his stuff on his own. I don’t think D’anna would apologize for that. So who would she apologize too? Who did the cylons mercilessly abuse? Who did she see?

It HAD to be Tigh. The reason I don’t like this is that it nullifies all of the drama from Tigh’s leading the resistance. In most instances where Tigh was in charge he screwed up royally (and being cylon would have been a possible explaination), but in the resistance he lead them off of New Caprica, he became a hero in the audiences mind.

To make him a cylon now scraps all of that. To me it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t know hes a cylon. If he is, then the reasons for his actions and even his actions themselves (killing Ellen) are moot, meaningless. The dramatic moments from those episodes would be rendered fake to me. And they weren’t fake!

But I’m certain it is Tigh, there’s no one else that deserves the apology from the cylons more. But it trashes the shows narrative for a single dramatic instance, and in my opinion isn’t worth it. Not worth it at all.

The writers of this show have given us great episodes, good episodes, and annoying episodes. At times the "final five" plot point co-pouts seem to me to be their "security blanket" to ensure they can always make the show "more" dramatic.

Also, if there are five more cylons, wouldn’t they have bodies for them to download into? Or is it (what I suspect) that the first five can’t download, and in fact some of them are actually dead, which is why D’anna had to go where she did to even see some of them?

Actually when Tigh is revealed as a cylon, I sure hope it doesn’t feel exceedingly lame.

      • Re: Baltar

Starbuck: They took one of her ovaries. Why do that to a cylon? There is the potential plot copout that the cylons didn’t know, but if the idea she’s a cylon hinges on what Leoben says, shouldn’t at least he know/suspect. It will be a pure jump the shark moment if Starbuck’s a cylon. I will stop watching from that moment on if this comes to pass.

        I wouldn’t abandon it yet. :)

We know where the incision was located, but did we ever hear anything about an ovary being removed except from Leoben? What if, instead of taking something out the Cylons put something in? Or what if they took an ovary, but stuck in a little "upgrade"?

I believe Kara could very well be a human, with an added Cylon-installed feature, maybe the ability to resurrect. Why? Why the farms in the first place? I suspect Cylons are doing something with human biology as part of their plan. Tempting humans with immortality would certainly bring them some converts, no matter their methods of achieving it.

Transfering a human consciousness into a Cylon body might very well be a valuable experiment as part of such a plan. In addition, Cylons know their current models are detectable. Perhaps their work includes the construction of an undetectable model? What better way to test undetectable parts than to put some new-fangled parts in a human (the resurrection circuitry), and send it back to them. It’s an excellent way to find out if the parts are truly undetectable, without going to the trouble of making a whole new model and implanting them in the fleet so no one notices.

Finally, who, among all of the characters takes the most risks, i.e. is most likely to die? Kara again and again, because of her skill set, is put in peril. Statistically, it’s only a matter of time before she bites it. Kara dies, resurrects in a Cylon-made body, and her personality is either intact (experiment succeeds), or mangled (whoops, grab another human some time in the future.)

I suspect she might be a walking, talking, independent-minded human-bred and born experiment.

Of course if Kara the human resurrects, the question becomes "what do the Cylons do with her?" Leoben would seem to have a plan of his own.

        Poor Kara. :(

        -Joe

P.S. On the other hand, if Kara the Cylon resurrects and is greeted by a bunch of smirking sister-Karas ("we love you Kara"), I might consider joining you in finding alternative Sunday programming.

      • Apology ?

But I’m certain it is Tigh, there’s no one else that deserves the apology from the cylons more.

I also think Tigh is likely, and that it would be dissapointing, but there are two points I’d like to make.

First, who deserves an apology more; a guy you beat-up and poke his eye, or a child who’s mother and father you torture to death? How about a mother who’s child you gun down in a temple? How about somebody (like the VP – Richard Hatch’s character.. whatshisname…) who you put on death-warrent and tried to have slaughtered like cattle? I won’t go on and on, but no, Tigh is NOT the most deserving of an apology.

Second, (as somebody else here pointed out) technically, just because D’Anna recognised the Other, doesn’t mean that we will. And it doesn’t mean that it’s a human. It COULD be a hybred.

        • Re: Apology ?

(like the VP – Richard Hatch’s character.. whatshisname…)

          Tom Zarek

          Doh!

          Sorry for the brain-freeze

I would say that of the major characters he is. Roslyn and Zarek had death warrents signed, but they weren’t executed, so I don’t think that requires apology. I already stated that I don’t think D’Anna had any influence on what Leoben was doing with Starbuck. Now some of the other characters, yes, they have seen worse and been treated worse by the cylons, but I’m positive they’ve intended all along to have a major character be a cylon, and I’m sure it will be Tigh.

On another note: Didn’t the final five look very Grey council to anyone else. Actually they would have been more white council, but….

I don’t think that is Either intentional OR avoidable. How do you (in general) hide the identity of a group of people? You put them in robes loose enough to hide frame size; you put them in droopie hoods, and then you light the space with insufficient contrast (darkness, light or shadows, either/all work). – I’m a firm believer in the phrase "It’s All about the Lighting". Not a real trade-markable situation, I think. Now the pillar-type structures could have made reference to the overhead light beamed striaght down, the Council used to cast a shadow on their face. But personally I think "pillar" is enough of a universal architecture theme so as not to arouse suspicion.

And just off the top of my head, there were always 9 Grey Council. (that was actually a major point of a few of the B5 ep’s.)

But yeah, I obviously agree that there were a lot of similarities.

Well, OK… But also keep in mind that even IF we agreed on this, just because Tigh is the MOST deserving of an apology, doesn’t mean it was him. Zerek, Roslyn and for that matter ANY HUMAN that she recognises (certainly any that was on the planet for the occupation) would probably have got the exact same reaction from her.

I agree with the other poster about having kids being a probably factor for elimination, so all that would mean is that it is NOT; Mr/Mrs Tyrol, either Adama, or anybody else on the Galactica durring the occupation, which really only rules out Dee.

But hey, what do _I_ know… I’m just the comic-relief talking bear.

  3. Origin of human cylons
We really don’t know much about how the humaniod cylons originated, and from what the cylon’s were saying neither do they.

Since they were introduced to us as spies everyone seems to assume they were created for the purpose of being spies. But when one considers what we’ve learned since then this is clearly not their purpose (at least not their full purpose). First, why create only 7 spies? More importantly, if they’re just supposed to be spies why create so many copies of each model? Clearly you can’t have thousands of 6’s running around the colonies as people are going to start recognizing these people they supposedly know. They were obviously designed to become an important part of cylon civilization (they appear to have become the cylon leaders).

Also consider they seem to have assumed a Judaeo-Christian religion, this would be an odd thing for them to pick up on their own, perhaps there was a more direct human influence at work in their origin. Consider the possiblity that the humanoid cylons were made not to allow the cylons to destroy humanity, but to bridge the gap between the humans and humanity. This is why the 7 fit into distinct personalities, not to be spies, but to teach the cylons about humanity. And the Judaeo-Christian religion combined with humanity the humaniod cylons have suggests that humans had a hand in designing them (perhaps Judaeo-Christian’s who wanted everyone to forgive and get along).

I think the final five were created by a human researcher (or researchers) for this purpose. This researcher(s) then travelled to cylon space to share the technology and succeeded in creating the seven we have met (along with the rest of the organic cylon technology). However, the machine cylons realized the organic stuff wasn’t a simple upgrade, decided they didn’t want unity, and managed to distort the human cylons true purpose from being a bridge into being weapons to destroy humanity. Perhaps the final five, designed without cylon interference, separated off from the rest with the bridge purpose intact, perhaps a few are left among the human population (perhaps with amnesia for protection or something).

Another posibility is instead of the final five being cylons at all perhaps they are the research team that helped create the humanoid cylons. The idea that they were cylons could be a misinterpretation of the idea the researches tried to spread that the cylons and humans should unite.

Also note everyone has assumed that because D’Anna recognized one of the final five that we will to. If the final five are human researchers from the past they would likely be long dead, perhaps she just realized who they really were (maybe she realized the mistaken purpose as well and wanted to apologize to humanity).

    • The Final Five

The Final Five clearly make it to earth and become "The Five" of the Illuminati. The world’s being run by Cylons I tells ya, Cyloooooooooooons!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, yeah, I know, but someone hadda say it, especially so soon after Robert Anton Wilson‘s death.

    • Re: Origin of human cylons
You assume that the humans in the colonies could develop a Judaeo-Christian religion, but everything in the show suggests they only have the one religion, and that’s their polytheistic one with Greekish Gods. Sure some of them are agnostics or atheists, but there’s no suggestion that there are any other actual religions – it’s either the Gods, agnosticism or atheism for everyone.

This suggests to me that the Cylon God is a Cylon concept.

However, it might be something influenced by the thirteenth tribe, who seem to have had some pretty impressive technology (what chance the colonials and the Cylons would be on that planet just when the star blows up without interference?) and have clearly been in communication with the twelve colonies since they left for Earth, because the information is in scripture about how to get there.

It’s all very confusing, but unfortunately news about the series is starting to say that ratings are declining and there’s no fourth season commissioned yet… we may never find out.

  4. I think the God discussion is the key
    What if:

    The final 5 are:

Jesus, Mohamed, Abraham, Buddha, and OK another monotheistic religion escapes me here but you get my correlation here. Always a fantasy of mine with regards to an idea is that religion was created by meddling outsiders. one of the things I liked about earth: final conflict before it went bat shit insane was that they took pictures of all the deity figures and merged them together and it formed the face of a companion.

But that doesn’t explain the recognition factor.

    • Re: I think the God discussion is the key

Personally, I had enough of that with the Chariots of the Gods? stuff from the 1970s– although that whole "Was God an astronaut? Did aliens build the pyramids? Can Erich Von Daniken draw a sensible conclusion?" craze did influence the original BSG, and we have a good show now as a result.

earth: final conflict before it went bat shit insane

That was like, what? Fifteen minutes into ep one? Right before they mentioned a CVI.

      — sorry, that’s always been a peeve of mine. But anyway…

I actually think you’ve got a really good point. It would be a cool tie-in, but alas; I fear that the reaction (recognition) of D’Anna means that it’s just gonna be Tigh.

      Here’s hopin’ though…

      .

Eh the first season had some merit beyond that, but when they kill of the main character and bring in a newer, younger, hotter version that grew up into an adult in an episode thing, that was bad, then it got much much worse. The final season, shudder.

The sad part was I kept watching the damn thing.

        • Re: I think the God discussion is the key
wasn’t there a reference to He Who must Not be named in this episode too? We can asssume the Cylons don’t worship Voldemort, but it would sure take the Kewl out of their religion if their One True God turned out tobe hades. Iblis from the original series was another name for lucifer and satan right? Actually Lucifer was baltars cylon sidekick in the original, so maybe that inspired the idea. What if the cylons worship hades. What if hades is one of the final five?
That crazy ship light episode featured people in all white, even though they were bleached colonial uniforms, maybe this is a reimagining of that?
The final five could be cyclons who found earth and are somehow advanced beyond belief, or maybe they are modeled after humans from earth, although i guess that makes teh 12 cylons, 12 colonies concept fall flat.
Sticking with the five benevolent advanced moels, with one of them being a malfunctioning one with a god complex, it doesn’t help us narrow suspects but it changes some cylon motives.
Tigh for example fighting his fellow cylons on behalf of humanity interests me, he jsut seems too Flawed to be a machine, I mean who builds an alcaholic android?
I considered Cain as a cylon but that makes what she did to the Six on the pegasus incredibly wrong.
The altruistic cylon who was wronged model points a shaking finger to Billy!
Zarek is a possibility as he is both a bit of a renegade, he also has rediculously powerful character shields, i was positive he was going to take a bullet next to Roslin.
I feel they are really doing something special with Starbuck, either she is from Earth or she is a cylon. ovaries or no ovaries, shes having visions we can’t dismiss it. Leoben seems to worship her.
if Scott bakula plays one of the final 5 i will be enraged.

          • Re: I think the God discussion is the key

Tigh for example fighting his fellow cylons on behalf of humanity interests me, he jsut seems too Flawed to be a machine, I mean who builds an alcaholic android?

            Colnel Tigh is Bender!!!

  5. I don’t think its starbuck
I don’t think that starbuck is a cylon, remember she caught baltar when he was preparing to get laid with six in his imagination(whatever) at season I then she asked to him about her blood test.

If she was a cylon then baltar would knew it, of course i assume that the final five cylon are exactly same like as others.

I would think about Danny Novacek, "The Bulldog", D’anna was psychologicly torturing him, she may apologized for this reason BUT the virus, placed into a beacon by 13.colony, it made cylons sick but not bulldog.

So im stuck here :P , i think we’ve seen that cylon but we’ve not seen the reason why D’anna apologized.
