Joss Whedon off Wonder Woman
posted February 3 2007, 2:55 pm by fiziko

Category: Movies Joss Whedon is no longer involved in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. It was rumoured that Warner had purchased a script from another source a few days ago to avoid potential copyright infringement issues, but now I'm wondering if that's the script they are using now. The details are at Newsarama.com. I also suspect this means the 2008 release date may have just become a little optimistic.

Well...

I'm now a lot less interested in seeing the film. I wonder if WW will become to the present what Spider-man was the the 80s and 90s, the comic-book movie that keeps almost getting made.

Aawwww no fair! I really wanted to see what Joss Whedon was going to do with it.

Now I'm not even half as excited.

Ditto. It's been downgraded from 'I'll be in line Opening Night with lots of friends' to 'If I make it to the theater while it's still there...'

The studio sees a different movie than Whedon. I suspect strongly, then, that this is a case of the studio understanding neither the character nor the fans who would be interested in seeing her. You know, as was the case with Catwoman, or with the exec who said that Scooby-Doo would be about what Scooby's always been about, you know, saving the world.

I've been wrong before, and my wife's a huge fan of the character, so I'll likely be there early in the run, but....

I suspect they want another dumbed-down blockbuster, while Joss wanted to explore deeper, darker aspects of the character. That's not to say that Joss' vision would necessarily be better ...he might have been going *too* dark/emotionally-tortured or something.

Honestly, it's Wonder Woman, it's supposed to be thinly veiled dominatrix softcore bondage, after all!

Who Cares?!

Maybe Whedon realized that making comic books into movies is a stupid and pointless idea and that he's better off not trying to convince studios to make a deeper, chracter driven drama than a summer blockbuster. Movies based on comic books are a waste of time.Movies will never be able to rival the scope and storytelling element that comic books showcase. Some may be entertaining (Spider-Man, Batman Begins) but no comic book movie can make you care about its chracter like a comic book can. All a comic-book based movie presents is a piece of fluff with a recognized chracter; 2/3 action 1/3 comic-book deviated plot. Bottom line is that a reading an epic chracter driven story for 2.99 is better than watching Dolph Lundgren as Super Skrull for 10.00. Think about it. Love to hear replys

Probably be lynched for saying it here, but I have read maybe a half dozen comic books in my life and have about zero interest in reading more. But I love the characters in the various non-comic-book ways they have been exposed to me (tv, cartoons, movies, and even books).

My feelings aside, making comic books into movies is not stupid or pointless. It's obviously very good business. Is it artistically boring? That's another question, one that each artist ultimately has to make.

I'm partly with you. I love comics, but the best representation of some of those characters were in novels written by traditional novel writers; the Hulk in peticular.

You can emphasize much more character development and delve deeper into a plot line when you aren't confined by little word bubbles and constantly changing writers/artists.
