Heroes Discussion - "Company Man"
posted February 27 2007, 6:09 am by fiziko

Category: TV Series This week devoted its focus on the Bennett family. It also introduced Missy Peregrym, who would have been my first choice as Lois Lane on "Smallville."

Wow.

This episode was astounding, and shows what this show can do when it focuses on an individual story - I hope that other characters get exploratory episodes like this.

Everyone's acting was great, but Jack and Haydn as Bennet and Claire were astounding, and I hope we see some kind of award in both their futures for this. I even cried during the last scene.

Absolutely, this episode blew me away. I had a few issues with it, like Parkman and them fighting with Ted doing his radiation thing, that much heat and radiation would have killed everyone except Claire pretty much instantly. Parkman was even thrown across the room once. Other than that though, I really enjoyed this episode. This show is one of my 2 favorite shows on television for the last, probably 10 years. The other being Battlestar Galactica. Funny thing though, this is the only show that I have been actually disappointed that its already over at the end of every episode. I just can't wait till the next week.

I posted last week that this show better deliver on its promise of answers, or risk becoming another Lost. I was so pleasantly surprised that I'm still smiling! Major kudos are deserved all around. *This*, Damon Lindelof, is how to make television!

I have a few questions for you other Bureaucrats. Does the ending (where HRG said exactly where to shoot) mean that HRG let Claude escape? The whole scene with HRG and Claude on the bridge seemed really odd. It was like the first shot was a misfire and the second a poorly faked miss.

Also, with a riveting story otherwise, does anyone else have trouble with the ignored consequences of radiation? Though Claire can heal the burns, wouldn't she still be highly radioactive, as would HRG and Parkman?

It's also interesting that HRG didn't use the Haitian to knock out Sprague. I almost expected Sprague to die, meaning Peter would be safe, but I guess I should've known better. ;)

Poor Claire. Every time she makes true progress in a relationship, it's taken away. It'll be interesting to see if she returns to her mother, tracks down her father, or looks up her "hero" (and uncle).

It was odd, but I think purposely so. I suspect HRG's first shot was purposely something of a "spasm" instead of a deliberate squeeze of the trigger so that Claude wouldn't go invisible and run. It certainly didn't seem that he was intending to let Claude go considering the number of shots he hit him with...unless, of course, there were squibs and blood packets involved. Could Claude have replaced HRG's ammo with blanks? :) I throw that one out there without any expectation of it being right unless Claude thought HRG couldn't aim properly.

Not necessarily.
Radiation comes in different flavors that affect a body differently. But part of being radioactive has to do with heavy, unstable atoms emitting particles and energy. Relativly low mass atoms that make up most of the body are rather hard to destabilize buy single/short exposures.
If you spend extended time in a contaminated area, taking contaminated materials into your body, then that is another story.

The funny thing about this episode is that I have my brother staying over, and he'd never seen/heard of this show before. So I spent quite a bit of time trying to explain the millions of different characters to him, only to have it focus on a select few. Hah! But it made it easier for him to understand and enjoy (:

This was a great episode. Now we know that Claire's dad really does love her.

great episode

I was on the fence about whether or not Mr. Bennet cared for Claire, but his actions at the end sure proved it. Also cool was showing some of the other company men (Eric Roberts, George Takei, Eccleston) and how they got rid of the invisible man. Ha!, and little Hiro.

I certainly don't understand why the company would be so lazy with Mr. Bennet though. Even though he had an excuse about why he hadn't turned Claire in, I think they could have been more careful to make sure he wasn't lying. Especially with the Eric Robert's character coming into the house and seeing Parkman and Bennet talking with papers.

Great thing is, it looks like they're providing answers before the season is over. Going out with a bang is fun and then we can look forward to whatever the season finale cliffhanger opens up.

Was it laziness or an acknowledgement that he's become vital to their operation? They may also be concerned that they don't know everything he does, and they want to be certain they know everything before "letting him go." That seemed to be a possible implication during the last discussion about Parkman.

Speculation
posted by vanyel on February 28 2007, 12:34 pm
This is complete speculation, but I think that Nathan's opposition to Peter's use of his powers is just like HRG's attempt to protect Claire: I think he's in on the whole thing with The Company. I suspect, but am less sure about, that Nathan and Peter's dad isn't really dead, but hiding. He may even *be* Linderman, though I think that's a real stretch.

It's too bad the preview for next week gave away a spoiler (Simone not really dying)...

If he was, I doubt he would have had the reaction he did when he was grabbed.
