Weekly Comics Discussion - April 18, 2007
posted April 18 2007, 6:16 am by fiziko

Category: Comics The complete shipping list can be found here. Based on last week's call for feedback, I've put some emphasis on the collections of reviewed material, and included links to the reviews. The review of the second arc of Runaways I mentioned last week will still go up shortly, and I'll post a review of volume three when it gets reprinted next Wednesday. After that, rather than continue that series, I'll focus on reviewing issues of comics whose trade paperback collections are just about to come out.

DC Comics

  • 52 WEEK #50
  • BATMAN AND THE MAD MONK - Read Timeshredder's review here.
  • BIRDS OF PREY #105 - Gail Simone will take a few more months to wrap up loose ends before she moves to Wonder Woman and Sean McKeever takes over this title.
  • BRAVE AND THE BOLD #3 - I've liked the first two issues.
  • FLASH THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE #11
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #8
  • NIGHTWING ANNUAL #2
  • SHOWCASE PRESENTS SUPERMAN VOL 3 - I stopped collecting after the first two. DC was really, really saccharine back in the 50s.
  • SUPERMAN BATMAN #34
  • WONDER WOMAN THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD
  • WORLD WAR III PART ONE A CALL TO ARMS
  • WORLD WAR III PART TWO THE VALIANT
  • WORLD WAR III PART THREE HELL IS FOR HEROES
  • WORLD WAR III PART FOUR UNITED WE STAND

Dynamite Entertainment

  • BATTLESTAR GALACTICA #8

Marvel Comics

  • ANNIHILATION BOOK 2 - I've heard this effectively reinvigorates Marvel's cosmic characters, but I haven't read it myself yet.
  • CABLE DEADPOOL #39
  • CIVIL WAR AMAZING SPIDER-MAN - Reviewed here.
  • CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE BOOK 1 - Reviewed with the contents of Book 2 included right here.
  • CIVIL WAR THE CONFESSION - A second printing of the material reviewed here.
  • CIVIL WAR THUNDERBOLTS - The first part of this collection was reviewed here.
  • DAREDEVIL DEVIL INSIDE & OUT VOL 2 - While we haven't formally reviewed any of Brubaker's work on Daredevil, it's HIGHLY recommended. So far, it's been better than a lot of Bendis' work. Brubaker keeps the character depth and still maintains high levels of action. SPOILERS TO GET CAUGHT UP TO THIS POINT (though I strongly recommend just buying Brubaker's first arc and reading it yourself): This is Brubaker's second arc. In the first arc, Matt is lead to believe that Foggy Nelson was murdered, though the reader eventually learns he survived and was placed in the witness protection program. Matt, who was imprisoned at the end of Bendis' run, is cracking in prison, and constantly beating the crap out of the other inmates. Part of the pressure is due to another man in the Daredevil outfit still running around in Hell's Kitchen, fighting the good fight. Matt eventually breaks free, with the help of the Punisher, Kingpin, and Bullseye, to confront the second Daredevil, who turns out to be Iron Fist, being payrolled by someone anonymous. The arc ends with Matt setting out to track down Foggy's "killer," who is also the person paying Iron Fist to keep up the ruse. End spoiler.
  • MIGHTY AVENGERS #2 - The first issue was a lot of fun, and was reviewed here.
  • MOON KNIGHT #9 - This should wrap up the Civil War crossover. I'll review it soon, but as I'll be out of town until late Saturday, it won't be right away.
  • SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #37
  • SQUADRON SUPREME HYPERION VS NIGHTHAWK #4 (OF 4) - The end of this enjoyable miniseries.
  • ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #108 - The Ultimate Knights story arc, which is also Bagley's last arc as penciller, continues.
  • ULTIMATE X-MEN #81
  • YOUNG AVENGERS VOL 2 FAMILY MATTERS TP - I enjoyed (but didn't review) the first arc, so I'll definitely pick this one up.
