This whole thing is overblown. Netscape was the father of Mozilla, which gave us Firefox. Parents and Grandparents generally don't outlive their offspring. This is nothing new or disturbing. Firefox carries the flag now.

Yeah,

Nobody goes to Giza to see the bottom layer of blocks in the pyramids... But they are important nonetheless.

Netscape was ^h^h^h IS the foundation of the modern browser (even the ones competing with Firefox). But as a living, breathing project.... It's been gone for a while now.

The first Mozilla (by Marc Andressen, if memory serves) was the first graphical browser. Marc was then hired by Netscape at a time when the company had no idea what it wanted to do, and only started the web browser thing after Marc had been there a few months. That was Netscape Navigator, which became synonymous with the company name, so people leave out the "Navigator" bit. So, the Mozilla we now know (which is what I'm using now, actually) is the son of Netscape in some ways, and the father in others.

Does anyone else have "I'm my own grandpa" running through their heads right now?

First one was Mosaic, then came Netscape which was "spelled n-e-t-s-c-a-p-e but pronounced Mozilla".

It's a while back, (and I might be wrong) but I can clearly remember switching to Mosaic (from something else) when it came out. All the people at the ODU computer lab were raving about the new browser and basically brow-beat me into trying it. I was using a browser named...IIRC... Cello. It came on the disk my ISP supplied when I upgraded my bulletin board access to a PPP account.

It's a while back, (and I might be wrong) but I can clearly remember switching to Mosaic (from something else) when it came out.

That could have been Cello, Lynx, or any of a number of other non-graphical web browsers. And you have no reason to feel old; the world wide web has only been around for 17 years now. (I've seen a lot of the history of that end, as I worked at CERN for six months.)

Everything since Netscape 8 was dreamed up to merely capitalize on Netscape's good name, which has had so much mud thrown on it the past few years it doesn't even have that going for it anymore.

Netscape ISP still lives on as far as I know, but I haven't seen many commercials for it lately. And somebody in the AOL corporate office will drag it's name back out and bolt it onto some other product in a couple of years.

The glory of Netscape was versions 2 and 3. Version 4 was lackluster. Everything since then has been a dressed down version of an older Mozilla product. Netscape has been dead for some time now, only it's zombified remains still walk the earth.
