Sanctuary Discussion
posted October 5, 11:15 am by fiziko

Category: TV Series hossman writes, What, no discussion thread for Sanctuary? The discussion took time to post because a few different authors intended to watch it, but it doesn't look like a full review is going to work out for any of them. Just in case...

Its early yet, but I enjoyed the show. The "big bad monster" was pretty goofy and fake looking, but other than that I have no substantial complaints. The bald guy was cool as heck, I gather from the story that he is going to be a reoccurring badguy. The fight in the warehouse between him and the hot chick was pretty good!

All in all, a pretty good first episode. Oh... anyone else find Samantha Carter with a British accent unbelievably hot?

As someone who saw all of the original webispodes, i was really disappointed.

While the web version didn't overwhelm me with awesomeness, it was entertaining, and really had nothing wrong with it other then that the greenscreening was really obvious in a lot of situations. But the writing, characters, and acting were all really well done.

This 2 hour premiere is essentially just a stretched out version of the original 4 webisodes, with many new scenes, some alterations to the plot, and a lot of tweaks to the backstories of hte various characters. While I can understand the need to stretch out the plot and add some filler (the really nice thing about webisodes is they can be whatever length makes sense to tell the story, these plot lines online were about 45 minutes total if i remember right) a lot of the plot changes and character changes they made really did a disservice to some of the great writing it originally had.

If you haven't seen the web version, the best way i can sum it up is like this: everything that seemed really trite, pat, contrived, or overused from a dozen other stories wasn't in the original version. And the way the two halves of the 2hour premiere seemed completely disconnected? apparently deliberate -- in the original those two stories interconnected really well.

I don't have the time or energy to enumerate everything they changed for the worse, but the one that bugs me the most is the main dude, Will, played by Robin Dunne. Originally he was a psychiatrist who worked in a hospital and his only connection with the police was that he patches up and casually questions their original suspect in the killing because he was one of his former patients -- and he believes this man when he says he didn't do it, because he's good at reading people and connecting with them (which is what catches Magnus's eye). We also learn via a flashback that when he was a kid his babysitter let him stay up late and he saw a really scary movie about bigfoot, and then "bigfoot" showed up in his room and caused him nightmares and years of therapy -- it turns out that "bigfoot" is in fact now Magnus's manservent who apologizes to him for his bad past deeds of wandering the countryside scaring children for fun. Now instead we've got two lame standbys: (1) his mother was killed by a monster when he was a child because Magnus couldn't stop it in time, and that shaped him into the man he is today: a (2) washed up FBI criminal psychologist and profiler who doesn't trust peoples perceptions.

I really wanted to like it ... i really did. Instead it was just "on".

Well, I guess I'll take a break from what seems to be my pattern of late of poo-poo'ing things to drop a note for Sanctuary.

Of all the series pilots I can remember, this was definitely among the best of them. Sure there's actually a tangable shark-tank there to allow them to jump it at a moments notice... but they haven't yet.

Most of the acting was better than an average pilot, most of the special affects were within the bounds of a typical person's suspension-of-disbelief borders, and most of the writing and characterization held my interest. - Not ALL, but most.

I'll watch the next few episodes NOT because I am giving a new SF series a change to get it's legs under it, but because I was entertained and interested in the product they have already produced.
