Heroes will be in hiatus this January, replaced by something called Superstars of Dance. The metahuman soap will return in February, but does this move mean the show is in danger?

It should be in danger. I've been trying to catch up with this season but so far it's been pretty terrible. I think this will be one of those shows where the 1st season will far outlast anything else the show attempts to do.
....death without the reboot option, and a moratorium on time-travel arcs, especially ones where the fate of the world at stake. I've said this elsewhere: the entire world doesn't need to be threatened. We know the world's not going to end. A convincing threat against characters who matter, with our understanding that (1) they might die and (2) they won't return if they do would be dramatically engaging.
I stopped watching (regularly, anyway) because I don't care about anyone in the show.

Well I've been one to bash the show around here, so I was willing to post an answer to your question about how to save it.

Heroes was never without it's problems, but it's so far removed from what made the first season so enjoyable that it's scarcely recognisable. It doesn't matter what they do now, the whole enterprise is irrecoverably soiled.
I'm still on season 1, but it would be nice if they'd come up with more creative threats than killing characters -- especially when we know death is either unlikely or impermanent. (Comics and movies have the same problem, and it's really annoying.) Make the story about putting the characters into difficult or challenging situations and how the characters overcome them. That sort of thing can be interesting even when we already know they will overcome the problem in the end. But it has to be done in a way that doesn't pretend there's any chance the main characters will lose; the only question is how they win, so focus on that.
(Sorry if that's a bit rant-ish. It's a major frustration of mine, right up there with "any friendship between a male and a female must inevitably be romantic". Guh.)

True-- it's just that heroes tend to play for high stakes, and death is a high stake.
Your way works, but requires *gasp* Really Good Writing to pull off, and Heroes hasn't had a surfeit of that for awhile.
