Possibly, but unlikely. Meyer's series goes back to 2005, and it has had quite a following prior to the recent movie. I find it difficult to believe that the pop-culture-referencing folks behind Buffy wouldn't know it and, knowing it, reference it.

I guess we should've seen that one coming.

I didn't know about that *other* vampire universe until the recent hype, by which time I'd forgotten the name of Buffy's latest Big Bad. I wonder if it is mere coincidence.
