Live-Action Dragonball Z
posted November 14 2002, 6:56 pm by fiziko

Category: Movies Korei writes, FOX has apparently gained the rights to a live-action movie of the popular anime/manga series "Dragonball Z". The info can be found at DBZ's official site, http://www.dragonballz.com. And, Dragonball's creator, Akira Toriyama, made this short statement about the live-action DBZ movie(from http://www.dragonballz.com/): "Recent movies have surprised us by entering such territory that used to belong only to comics with wonderful technology and wisdom. As a big movie fan, I am truly looking forward to the movie version of Dragonball. I hope you will entertain millions and millions of people with the brand new Dragonball of a totally new dimension that surpasses my imagination," and there are rumors of the movie coming out around 2003 or 2004. You can find more information at http://www.filmforce.ign.com/. That's all I know. Korei

This following the announcement of a live-action Akira...
Well, I have more faith in hollywood to convey the feel of DBZ (Mindless violence, blowing shit up) than the Akira feel.

Of course, the real question is: Will they CGI the hair? : )

I couldn't follow Akira any way so I won't even know what I'm missing.

I'm going to say 70/30, against. Their CGI budget is going to be pushed harder and further than half-pint, half-Sayians being trained by a Nameck. Why spend money on something that could be done with a prop, especially when there are millions of SFX shots that need real thought

are they going to have to make 18 movies just to get through one fight? I can picture it now...get to the end of the first one, and all we've done is introduce the characters. Next time, on dragonball Z, will piccolo continue to train gohan? or will gohan destroy the world by becoming a giant monkey thing? come pay $8.50 in a year and a half to see. 'course, all this is fueled by my irritation with the current (on Toonami) fight with Boo. come ON. FINISH the damn thing already. "Hey. let's have him absorb EVERYBODY. but not REALLY COMPLETELY some of them. like, Gohan can still be alive somewhere, maybe...but he couldn't beat boo before, right? oh, no, see that's because he didn't reveal his TRUE powers last time" WELL WHY THE HELL NOT?? dammit. I wouldn't even bother watching, but when one is unemployed there isn't much else to do at 4:30pm.

I agree that this is a long story and they won't be able to make it ALL into a movie(s), but I am 100% sure it won't be like the anime series on TV, where they take up half an hour just showing the characters from 20 different angles before a fight. But I don't like what you're saying, it looks like you don't like dragonball, then what the hell you doing here? I agree that the TV series sucks big time, but the comics (french manga) are GREAT. Gohan didn't know he had those 'powers', everybody has powers they don't use in dragonball, that is impossible to use. Even you, you know you only use about 2% of your brain? What if someone appeared in the world and could make you use your full 100% brain? What would you say? Cool? What if someone said "WELL WHY THE HELL DIDNT YOU REVEAL YOUR TRUE CAPABILITIES??? YOURE STUPID!!!" You'd like that? Dude, it's anime manga, not everything is real you know..go along with it and stop whining. ugh. Dont blame dragonball for what the tv series did to it. Plus....DB is supposed to be for kids, it was created for kids and teenagers, so stop whining about a kid's thing, get a job.

i wouidn't mind the characters hair to change to make it more realistic, i mean think about that type of hair in the cartoons would only be suited for cartoon characters...they should only keep the costumes, and change it a little bit so it won't be too bright... the creators do have worse things to worry about...i mean messing with dragonball z to become a real live movie would need some serious CGI work, i mean the explosions are worse then atom bombs, taking up planets or half a galaxy...but after seeing the matrix movie and matrix 2 clips i think it would be very interesting

Why risk making a really good anime like Dragonballz into a live action movie? Has people already forgotten the Street Fighter incident? I don't want that to happen to dbz. Sure, it might become a huge success like Mortal Combat, but I don't know. As for people to play in it, I jus hope they find the right people for the job.

If DBZ is gonna be anything like the american version of street fighter then i know it's gonna be horrible. But if DBZ is anything like the chinese verison of street fighter then it's gonna rock big time.:D

ok, here's how its going down. the original release date was targeted for summer 2004, but due to some issues, that's when they're going to start shooting. it should be out sometime late 2005, early 2006. there will be 4 movies. one for the saiyans saga, frieza saga, the androids/cell saga, and one for the buu saga. there are many rumors flying around about who will play who such as Bruce Li for Vegeta? but the one thing i have heard that i actually believe is that they have cast Vin Disel (or whatever) to play Perfect Cell. i've recieved a teaser movie poster in my email and if you wish to see it, it is here.

hi there, i am a new user to the site but i am a huge fan of dragonball z, especially the series. My take is just to say that in the coming movie, the best to play goku is Robin Shou, he is the perfect guy to play him and also for vegeta Jet Li. If these actors do not sign on to play them in the movie version, thousands of fans would be very dissapointed. I think the first villan should be freiza, but any version will be cool and i cant wait for it in theatres. I have the entire series on tape and I hope to see a new series soon. Keep up the good work and please I want to mention that I cant get enough of DBZ. Couple days ago, i saw the prototype poster and i think it is cool. Thank you!

why do you want these anime movies made into live action movies? anime and manga should be left alone ! I have watched anime for many years and liked it befor alot of people heard of it(i know this makes me a nerd but who the fuck cares)now that people are starting to get into it HOYWOOD IS EXPLOITING IT!!! these movies were made by artists and they were great, now a bunch of greedy ass holes are going to remake it and its going to suck. And because its becoming more and more populare these they want to "cash in on it" so to speak. In short the people that ORIGINALLY made these shows, films, manga, etc. were trying to make art but now the people who are remaking them just want to make money so...DONT GO SEE THESE MOVIES WHEN THEY COME OUT. DONT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR MONEY SO YOU CAN SEE THEM TRASH THE ANIME THAT YOURE A FAN OF!!! from an angry nerd lol

You may have a point, but if they have the original creator on board (as reports have claimed) then they already have a one up on the DragonBall GT series which was made just to "cash in" on the popularity of DBZ. GT was also used as a marketing ploy to get people in Japan to buy the Dragonball GT fighting game which came out at that time. Also, the same argument could be used for comic book movies. I remember such adaptations as "Captain America" that sucked major. But recently things have gotten better and movies like X-Men and Spider-Man may have strayed from the comics, but are still really good movies. Besides, any Hollywood adaptation of anything is just a way to "cash in" on its popularity. What do you think the "Lord of the Rings" movies are? And as different from the books as they are, they're still great movies. So don't trash the movie before they even start filming the dang thing. It may suck or it may rock. It's impossible to tell how it will turn out until the finish product is presented.

Yes Kyel Herbert talked to fox an they said that the movie would not be made! This would have been an awsome apportunity for Akira's show. But you know how fox is they never make animated movies or movies that were first tv shows. Its not right! If you find out that this statement is false reply to this comment.

A DBZ movie i have been waiting for this my hole life. I am a huge dbz fan and have seen and collected every Dragonball,Dragonballz, and Dragonballgt. I have seen them alot of times. Alot of people dont think that its a good idea to make a live dragonball z movie. I think that its about time they decided to do it. The movie will be a sucess if it has the right actors in it. I say that Jet Li is vegeta, the main charactor in mortal combat should be Goku, lienardo dicaprio should be trunks, and Keanu Reeves would be big gohan. As for little gohan i cant think of any young actors to play the part. Thats all the sayains. Piccolo would be Weisly snipes, krillen could be Jackie chan yeah he mite be old but he is funny just like krillin and krillin always gets hurt just like all of jackie chan movies. Cell would be the guy that did the movie spawn he was also in the mike tyson movie. Frieza could be the the green gobolin from spiderman. He has the voice for it and hes not that out of shape. Majin buu can be anybody, he dosent talk that much and he has to many transformations, hes fat short skinny i would just get someone that already no's martial arts and the rest would be computer animated. For those little parts like the ginyu force, they could be martiel arties as well. Like i said if the movie has the right actors then it will be a success if not then who knows if it will be good or not etheir way im going to go see it. If u have a comment on who would be good actors for the parts let me know.

The reason why the movie was delayed is that Akira Toriyama wanted to be the director of the movie and Fox had him sign a new contract which basically gave him the boot. Hugh Jackman will not be playing Goku because he held out to play the part. I think the more suitable person for this part is Jet Li or that other Asian dude that was in Bulletproof Monk and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. As for the rest of the cast, it will have to be low-budget so that they can be able to use the CGI. ILM, which is the leader in modern CGI was made from George Lucas, will probably be the people running most of this movie. If a deal can't be reached with them, then it will probably have to be Pixar. The rest of the cast will be computer generated, as well as the baddies. Would be nice to throw a fight with Broly, but I highly think it's going to be the Saiyan, Namek/Frieza, Cell/Cell Games, and Buu Sagas. Would be nice if they had someone play adult Gohan. Maybe have the dude from the Karate Kids series play Master Roshi, that would be awesome. But there won't be any 'big-name' Hollywood stars involved in this one.

What is the status of the movie if you are upadted to this one, and if it is true that there would be a movie for this. As for now i didn't see any information from any producers or movie makers about the DBZ movie, i think that this is only a side opinion giving movie goers to look for, but in the end nothing is find. Hey its already 2006 and none from any site give any information about the movie even the well known search engine didn't display about the film, only forums and discussion, i'm an abid fan of DBZ but as for now since 2002 discussion still none came out real, it's 4 years now guys and what happen to the film discussion the same as the movie to, also in mind only.
